The hotel on Town Lane is the obvious choice and the only one that is actually in the village: an old building on a proper street rather than a block on a dual carriageway, with low ceilings downstairs and locals minding their own business.

Everything else nearby belongs to the airport. TW6 2GD is ten minutes north at Terminal 5, and another sits west at Colnbrook, SL3 0FF, despite what its sign promises. Plenty of guests in TW19 are not in a hotel at all but in a house or a let on one of the village streets, which the desk handles just as readily.

The drive to Terminal 5 takes about ten minutes and the walk about twenty five, which nobody does. Terminal 4 and the southern perimeter are a similar distance east. In the other direction there is Ashford, Staines and open water, and the aircraft climb out over the fields to the west with a noise that turns out to be oddly companionable rather than intrusive.

What is genuinely good here is the reservoir path in the morning, which Roxi will point you at if you are staying more than a night. What is not here is a night out. There is no high street, no restaurant row and nothing open late, and an evening in Stanwell is the room and the company in it.

Because everything arrives by road, notice matters more here than anywhere else on this site. Ninety minutes in the evening rush is a realistic ask. Later on, an hour is usually enough. A four hour booking or an overnight makes far more sense out here than the three hour minimum, which at this distance is largely motorway.

Addresses need a landmark. The lanes around the village confuse a driver at night, so give the desk a pub, the church or the reservoir side along with the street, and she will find the door without a round of phone calls at eleven.

Terminal 5 passengers flying at dawn who wanted somewhere quieter than a perimeter hotel. Airport and freight staff who live locally. Contractors on a long posting who have taken a let in the village rather than a hotel room, and who are, by the fourth week, extremely tired of their own company.

It is the most residential place on this map, and that changes the tone of an evening. Nobody here is between flights, and a village booking runs slower than a terminal one on purpose.

Margo is the most self contained name on this list and suits a long, unhurried evening in a village that offers nothing to rush towards. Roxi says the last ten minutes of the drive out here are her favourite of the week because London stops looking like London.
