Overnights that end before the first departure

Terminal 5 sends a great many aircraft out before eight in the morning, which fills the western hotels with people who gave up a night in town to avoid a taxi at four. That is exactly the guest an overnight is built for. The hotel at Colnbrook, SL3 0FF, is a ten minute drive from the terminal rather than a walk, and what you get for the drive is a car park outside the window instead of a taxiway and a genuinely dark room.

Out at Stanwell it is quieter still. There is no station in the village and nothing open late, so an overnight there is the room, the company and the last departures going out over the reservoir. Margo is honest that at that distance a three hour booking is mostly motorway and an overnight is the sensible shape.

Breakfast happens if there is time for it and is skipped without ceremony if there is not. Nobody lingers over a buffet in a building where the lifts are full of suitcases from six o'clock. If your departure is at seven, the night is planned around that from the first message rather than discovered at half past five.

An overnight is a booking of hours, a long unbroken stretch of them, and it is company for that stretch and nothing further. The fee covers her time exactly as the three hour line does. Nothing else is offered here or implied by the length of it.

Ask for a floor away from the road and, on the northern row, a side facing away from the runway. Aircraft stop going over at about eleven and start again a little after six, which sounds worse on paper than it is; what actually wakes people is the luggage in the corridor at dawn. A late checkout, where one is going, is worth more than any view.

In a village or a let rather than a hotel, give the desk a landmark with the street. The lanes around Longford and Stanwell confuse a driver at eleven at night, and a pub or a church name saves a round of phone calls at the worst possible hour.

Lea prefers the Colnbrook side and says the middle of the night is her best hour, once the western edge of the airport settles. Roxi takes evenings and overnights in TW19 and rates the last ten minutes of the drive out there as the best part of her week. Thea is the steady one for a long haul arrival that does not turn into a conversation until midnight.

Stacy works the same western side and knows which hotel bus leaves from which door. If you are on the southern perimeter instead, the shorter formats on hotel room visits may fit your morning better than a full night does.

An overnight wants more warning than a three hour call, ideally the day before, because it takes a whole night out of a diary rather than a corner of one. At the western hotels and in the villages, ninety minutes is a realistic minimum even for an evening already in motion.
