Hayes is the best connected town on this map and almost nobody books it for that reason. The Elizabeth line puts Paddington about twenty minutes east and the central terminals about nine minutes west, which means a guest based here can have dinner in town and still be first in the queue at Terminal 3 in the morning.
It is a working town rather than a night out, and this page says so plainly. It is also a town with a theatre, a canal and an enormous old record factory, which is more than the business park hotels around it would suggest. The line that changed the town
Hayes and Harlington station is about five minutes from the centre of town and carries the Elizabeth line in both directions. Westbound, the central terminals are roughly nine minutes away. Eastbound, Paddington is a little under twenty and Bond Street a few minutes more, with no change either way.
The only other station within reach on foot is Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 at about half an hour, which is a distance rather than a walk. In practice the station and a five minute car cover everything, and several of the companions who work UB3 come out on that same line rather than driving.
Hotels in UB3 and UB4
A hotel sits by junction four of the M4, modern and quiet, five minutes from the station when the car is going the right way. Danielle meets guests in its lobby with the day already parked at the door.
The rest are the Bath Road buildings with Hayes addresses: the very large one, the other big full service one and the one with the glass roofed courtyard, all five minutes from the town by road and all considerably longer on foot. None of them is a partner of this desk. They are large, warm and completely uninterested in who is visiting whom, which is exactly what is wanted at eleven at night.
Two things in this town worth an evening
The Beck Theatre on Grange Road runs a real programme, touring plays and comedy, about ten minutes from the station in a genuinely residential part of town. Nora argues that an evening with something booked in the middle of it is kinder to a tired guest than a list of options, and on a Tuesday in week three of a contract she is right.
The other is the Old Vinyl Factory on Blyth Road, the vast former record works now turned into flats, offices and a cinema, five minutes from the station. Violetta calls it the only building in Hayes with any romance to it, and she is not wrong. Neither needs a car.
Stay in or go east
There are two shapes of evening here and it is worth deciding which before she leaves town. The local version stays put: a drink in the hotel, something ordered before the kitchen closes, the curtains shut on a car park with the M4 humming behind it. Nobody makes that feel like second best.
The other version gets on a train. Hayes and Harlington to Bond Street is quick enough that dinner in central London costs you the journey and nothing else, and the ride back out on a nearly empty carriage is one of the better parts of it. Either way, the booking runs three hours or more and her travel sits inside that.
Who is based in Hayes
Long stay contractors, mostly, living in a hotel from Monday to Thursday and running out of things to say about the project by the second week. Stockley Park and the industrial estates towards West Drayton feed a steady stream of them.
Alongside those are airline passengers who worked out that a UB3 hotel and a nine minute train beat a perimeter room, and a number of purely local bookings to addresses around UB4. The desk handles all three the same way.
