Bath Road escorts along the northern perimeter

TW6 2AQ sits nearest the northern runway and has rooms facing straight down it. Guests either request that view on purpose or regret it once, and both reactions are reasonable. The hotel at the Harlington end is the other big full service option, five minutes by car from the Harlington end and about eighteen minutes on foot from Hayes and Harlington station, a walk Liana has done in daylight and refuses to recommend in rain.

At the far western end, past Sipson, another stands in Longford. It wears a terminal on its sign and runs a shuttle of roughly ten minutes to reach it. None of these hotels is a partner of this desk, and none of them needs to be. She arrives as your guest and walks past reception like any other visitor.

For Terminals 2 and 3, anything on the eastern half of the road is five minutes by car through the tunnel. The walk exists, takes closer to half an hour and involves that same tunnel, and almost nobody does it twice.

For Terminal 5, the western end is closer but the perimeter road matters more than the map does. At nine in the evening it runs freely and at seven it does not. Before nine the lobbies belong to conference badges and arriving groups, and the bars are loud in a way that suits nobody who has just flown. Kitchens close early because the guests leave early: order before nine or decide now that you are not eating downstairs.

After ten the character changes completely. The bars thin, the corridors quieten, and the aircraft stop going over around eleven. Luna prefers this stretch of the night on principle and will tell you that the same road is horrible at seven and perfectly civilised at eleven. Between then and about six in the morning the Bath Road is one of the quieter places in west London, which is not what anybody expects of it.

Airline passengers on an enforced overnight. Contractors working at Stockley Park, Sipson or out towards Slough, in the same building from Monday to Thursday for months at a time. Long haul arrivals who cannot face another hour of road. Couples separated by a schedule, taking the only evening the rota allowed.

The desk sees the same pattern in the messages: a fixed hour, a room number that will follow, and no interest whatever in a night out. What the row offers is privacy and proximity, and that turns out to be enough.

The village side of the row brings in Liana and Tiffany from Harlington, while Laura comes down from Paddington on the fast train and Karolina covers the central terminal end. Six or seven names is the realistic list for any given evening. Ask the desk which of them is free before settling on one.

Behind the eastern hotels is Harlington, an actual village with an old church at the end of its lane. Hayes is a short drive north east and has the Elizabeth line, a theatre and somewhere to eat after nine. West of Sipson the road ends at Longford, two pubs and a great deal of sky.
