Central terminal nights across TW6 and UB3

One hotel stands in the central area itself. The lift is quick, the lobby is indifferent to everybody in it, and a delayed bag does not wreck the evening because you are already there.

The rest sit on the northern perimeter. TW6 2AQ has rooms that look straight down the runway, which some guests ask for deliberately. Another has a glass roofed courtyard and a bar that outlasts the others on the row. Two more are the large anonymous ones, which for a late arrival is a feature rather than a complaint.

Further out again, a hotel stands at Cherry Lane, a few minutes beyond the main road and noticeably calmer for it. None of these hotels is connected to this desk in any way. She arrives as your visitor and nothing about that is unusual in a building where half the guests checked in after ten.

If you land with daylight left, the best thing at this end of the airport is not indoors. The Three Magpies sits on the Bath Road with the northern runway immediately behind the fence, and on a westerly day the aircraft come over the garden every ninety seconds or so. Milena suggests it to guests who need twenty minutes to stop feeling like cargo.

After that the hotel, because there is nothing else. Kitchens along this row close earlier than anyone expects, so the working rule is to order before nine or plan not to eat there at all. Nobody is offended by a tray at eleven.

There is a walking route from the central terminals to the Bath Road hotels. It runs about twenty five to thirty minutes, goes through a tunnel built for traffic, and is no fun at all with a case or in rain. Hayes and Harlington station is a similar distance on the other side, roughly twenty five minutes on foot from the middle of the row.

So the answer is almost always a car, which takes five minutes and costs you nothing in dignity. The desk plans her arrival the same way. She comes by road from town, usually inside the hour, or on the Piccadilly line when the hour makes that quicker.

Connecting passengers with a long enough gap to be worth a bed. Business travellers flying out of Terminal 3 early and refusing to start the morning on the M4. Guests whose evening flight vanished from the board and who now have a hotel voucher and an unplanned night.

It is also the part of the airport where people arrive at their most disoriented, having crossed enough time zones to be hungry at four in the morning. That is what an unhurried three hours is for.

Karolina is the composed one, comfortable waiting in a lobby full of moving crowds and entirely uninterested in hurrying for a lift. Milena is the one who wants half an hour by the runway fence first if the light allows it. Both know that dinner here happens before ten or not at all.
