Hayes and Harlington station, on the Elizabeth line, is about eighteen minutes on foot from the village. That walk runs beside a road built for lorries. In daylight it is unremarkable; at night it is miserable and everybody who has tried it says so. A short car covers it in five minutes.

The central terminals are around thirty minutes away on foot, which is a theoretical distance rather than a real one, and five minutes by road. From town, the Elizabeth line reaches Hayes and Harlington in roughly twenty minutes from Paddington, which is why several of the women come out this way rather than driving.

The one with the glass roofed courtyard and its neighbour are the two big full service buildings on this stretch of the Bath Road with Hayes addresses, both five minutes by car from the Harlington end. A third is the large anonymous one, and TW6 2AQ sits nearer the runway with rooms that face it.

Inside, these are warm, well staffed and entirely indifferent, which is what most guests want at eleven at night. Their bars stay useful after ten even when their kitchens do not. None is connected to this desk in any way, and nobody in those lobbies is looking at anybody else.

Low on spectacle, high on comfort, which is the correct trade for a Tuesday in a hotel behind a village. If the weather allows and there is light left, a slow loop of the lane and back takes twenty minutes and resets a day better than a third drink would. Otherwise it is the hotel, the shoes off and a conversation that goes wherever it goes.

Dinner happens before nine out here or it does not happen. Liana plans around that rather than complaining about it, and she is unbothered by a small table, a short menu or a bar that has run out of the thing you asked for.

Airport staff contractors and engineering teams on long postings. Conference guests who came for one day and stayed three. Freight and logistics people working out of the estates towards Cranford and Sipson. A steady number of travellers on an enforced overnight who assumed there would be something to do and discovered there is not.

For all of them the evening is the hotel and the company in it, and the village is a pleasant ten minute surprise rather than a plan.

Liana comes out on the Elizabeth line and is famously hard to rattle, whether the room number has changed or the guest is two hours late and apologetic. Tiffany is quicker and slightly wicked, reads a room in under a minute and likes this village genuinely rather than politely.

The same hotel row is home ground for Bianka, Luna and Vanessa, and Danielle and Nora are a few minutes east in Hayes on the same train line. That is a realistic seven for a UB3 evening. The desk will tell you who is actually free rather than listing everybody.
