Terminal 5 hotel evenings in TW6 and SL3

Heathrow Terminal 5 station sits under the terminal, about five minutes on foot from the concourse, and carries the Piccadilly line, the Elizabeth line and the Heathrow Express between them. That is more choice than any other station in the postcode offers.

The detail regular travellers here rely on is the weekend service: on Friday and Saturday nights the Piccadilly line keeps running through to Terminal 5 rather than stopping at half past midnight. Any other night it does stop, and after that the way in and out of this end of the airport is a car.

This area straddles two postcodes, TW6 at the terminal and SL3 once you cross into Colnbrook. The village on that side kept its old high street, and the Ostrich Inn on it is a properly ancient coaching house that makes the business parks behind it look like scaffolding. Stacy will take you there for one drink if the evening starts early enough.

What Colnbrook offers in return for the drive is quiet. Your window looks at a car park rather than a taxiway, the corridors go silent by eleven, and the room is dark enough to sleep in before a dawn departure. What it costs you is ten minutes each way and the certainty that you cannot stroll back to the terminal.

From central London allow an hour, and considerably more if she has to cross the M4 westbound between five and seven, when the motorway stops behaving like a road. Later in the evening the same journey shortens to forty minutes or so.

Because of that, this end of the airport rewards notice. Tell the desk the flight number if you are still travelling and she will leave town while you are on approach rather than after you have showered and started wondering. If your hotel is at Colnbrook, say so in the first message: the drive is a different drive.

Dawn long haul departures, mostly. Terminal 5 sends a great many aircraft out before eight in the morning, which fills the western hotels with people who have deliberately given up a night in town to save an hour of taxi at four. Beside them are the guests who have simply landed exhausted and do not intend to see anything of London at all.

Both want the same shape of evening: early enough to be worth having, finished at a sensible hour, no expedition. The village pubs at Longford and Colnbrook are the only things out here worth leaving a room for, and only while it is light.

Angelika treats the Terminal 5 clock as the whole design of the evening and would rather arrive at nine than at eight while you are still hunting for an adaptor. Lea prefers the Colnbrook side and will tell you before you book that the hotel with the terminal in its name is a drive rather than a walk. Everything at this end joins up. Longford is the village at the western tail of the Bath Road, five minutes by car. Stanwell lies on the other side of the runway approach, ten minutes south, with no station of its own.
