TW3 evenings: a high street, a park, fifteen minutes to the gates

TW3 1JL and TW3 1JG both sit on Lampton Road two minutes from Hounslow Central, which makes them the practical choice for anyone using the town as a base rather than the airport.

TW5 0BU is a different proposition: a large, functional hotel on the Great West Road, ten minutes from the town centre and roughly fifteen from the terminals when the A4 is clear. Cindy is honest about what that stretch of road is, dual carriageway and retail sheds with an aircraft over the top every ninety seconds, and equally honest that the bar stays open and she has never needed a table booked in advance. None of these hotels has any arrangement with the desk.

Hounslow does South Asian food better than most of central London and does it later. The high street is still moving at ten, which is an hour at which the airport hotels have gone dark. Michelle will pick somewhere, walk you there in under a quarter of an hour and order more than you intended to eat.

There is more green here than the reputation allows, too. Lampton Park is ten minutes north of the station with old trees rather than a strip of grass beside a road, and Sonya likes twenty minutes in it before dinner with a guest who has been sitting in an aircraft or a meeting room since morning. That needs daylight, so say so when you book.

For a single night before an early flight, the airport wins. You are closer, the morning is shorter and there is nothing you need from a high street at six.

For anything longer than one night, the town wins comfortably. You get restaurants, a park, a train that runs late at weekends and a break from the sound of a runway. The terminals are still fifteen minutes away, which is convenience rather than oppression. That is the trade, and the desk will not pretend it goes the other way.

Engineers and project managers three weeks into a job that was supposed to take one. Airline and logistics staff on rotation. Guests who have simply had enough of perimeter hotels and want an evening that involves a street.

There are also a good number of local bookings that have nothing to do with the airport at all, to houses and flats around TW3. The desk treats those exactly the same way: an address, a landmark, a time.

Cindy treats a Hounslow night with the same care she would give a Mayfair one, which guests out here notice within a minute of the door opening. Michelle is the warm one and the reason a fair few bookings end up on the high street rather than in the hotel restaurant. Sonya is direct and unhurried and very good at the last hour, when nobody is performing any more.
